Environmental Engineer Intern, NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection

Background

The New York City Mayor’s Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) is a team of scientists and engineers that was established to design, build and operate a set of world class municipal programs to advance cleanup and redevelopment of brownfield sites in New York City.OER also provides environmental counsel to the Mayor’s Office and serves other important functions in the seat of city government.Working in the Mayor’s Office of Environmental Remediation with direct supervision, the selected candidates will perform professional scientific work in environmental engineering in the field and the office.Review investigation and remediation work activities, coordinate document review and assist in research, investigations, or studies, related to the functions or activities of the NYC Office of Environmental Remediation. Conducts review of remedial action plans, drawings, diagrams and reports to evaluate the appropriateness for implementation. Effectively communicate any necessary revisions to supervisors and real estate development teams.Attend meetings with environmental consultants and others to develop and approve products, schedule projects, and evaluate work performance; participate in meetings with community members, consultants and other government agency representatives to fulfill project requirements.Review examinations of soil samples and rock cores; classification by constituent elements, stratification, compaction and other characteristics; review preliminary drawings of structures; review profile drawings and graphs of subsurface structures.Assist with assigned projects within all OER Environmental Quality programs (NYC VCP, E-Designation Hazmat, Air, and Noise).Review boring installations used to obtain soil samples, rock cores, undisturbed soil samples, ground water elevations, etc; review data to determine the source, nature and extent of contaminants.Participate in routine inspections, operations, installations or testing operations on a remediation site to ensure compliance with remedial action plans, Federal, State and City environmental regulations.Perform mathematical calculations.


 

Minimum Qual Requirements

  • A Baccalaureate degree in environmental, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college.
  • A Baccalaureate degree in engineering technology is not acceptable.

 

Preferred Skills

  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with database development
  • GIS and web technology preferred
  • Possession of a valid New York State motor vehicle driver’s license
