Enjoy Farm-Fresh Fruits and Veggies with Corbin Hill Food Project
Members of The New School community don’t have to travel to the agrarian oasis of upstate New York to get their hands on fresh fruits and vegetables.Students, staff and faculty members of the university community can become shareholders in the Corbin Hill Food Project (CHFP), a farm share that connects farmers in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State with residents in New York City.
Founded by Dennis Derryck, professor of Professional Practice at the Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy, CHFP’s was founded primarily as a means of providing fresh fruits and vegetables to communities that would ordinarily have extremely limited access to fresh produce.
CHFP also delivers fresh produce to members of The New School community, who have been crucial in creating the branding and infrastructure of Corbin Hill and continue to make up a great deal of the project’s core staff. New Schoolers take part in Corbin Hill through buying shares, conducting pertinent research and coursework and lending their expertise.
Ultimately, CHFP hopes to address the injustices of unequal food access, halt the rise of the resultant diet-related diseases in Harlem, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and the Bronx, and to build the relationships between New York City and the Finger Lakes. The weekly share drop offs continue through November 18. The mixed shares will be pre-sorted, and consist of 8-11 vegetables, 1-2 fruits, and a rotation of dried beans and tortillas. These shares cost $28 a week for 8-11 items; eggs are $4.50 for a dozen; and an extra fruit share is $8.50. Shares can be picked up on the ground level of 2 West 13th St.For more information and to sign up for a CHFP farm share, visit corbinhillfarm.com.
