Earth Month 2023 Event Recap: Rhythms of the Land Screening

‘Rhythms of the Land,’ a multimedia documentary film, was screened during the 2023 Earth Month events at The New School. Present at the event was the director, Dr. Gail Myers, filmmaker and cultural anthropologist. The event was curated and moderated by Mike Harrington, Director of Sustainability Engagement, and Dr. Kristin Retnolds, Chair of Food Studies in the Schools for Public Engagement.

Earth Week: Art + Design + Democracy

During the Month of April, the Tishman Center will be hosting, co-sponsoring and promoting Earth Week events. Our theme this year is: Art, Design, Democracy: Tools to Achieve Climate Justice. We will have a number of events featuring musicians, chefs, artists, planners and academics who will share their experiences, art, music and more to help us think of creative and engaging ways to get closer to a more just and safe world. EVENT RECAP | Earth Week: "Curriculum of the Anthropocene"

The “Curriculum of the Anthropocene” event kicked off the Tishman Center’s 2021 Earth Week programming. We invited four New School faculty members to discuss how the New School’s curriculum could be altered to better prepare students to deal with the Anthropocene - a geological time period wherein human activity has undeniably affected Earth’s climate and environment.

RECAP: Earth Week Keynote Speech with Drs. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson & Mia Charlene White

The 2021 Earth Week Keynote was presented by Drs. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, a marine biologist, policy expert, and writer and Dr. Mia White, one of our faculty at The New School and a Tishman Center Affiliated faculty member. Her work has been featured The New York Times, Washington Post, and Scientific American. Most recently she has co-edited an anthology with Dr. Katherine K. Wilkinson, “All We Can Save”. We tuned with Dr. Johnson to see how the project came about.

Tishman Center 2021 Book List

Since our last book list, the world has changed quite a bit. While we have many new challenges stemming from the pandemic and many other developments, a lot of the work that needed to be done last year has not gone away. During Earth Week 2021, we want to share some works to help understand the world we are living in and a more just world that we want to see. There are also some New School links to some of these books, showing the work that our community is doing towards justice and equity.

2020 Faculty Grants Update, Part 1 of 4: “Whole Earth Curriculum”

In Fall ‘19, faculty grants were awarded to support four projects related to the Tishman Center’s mission. One of those projects, “Developing Milano’s ‘Whole Earth’ Curriculum” was led by Leonardo E. Figueroa Helland (Milano/EPSM Faculty), and Mindy Fullillove (Milano/Urban Policy Faculty). As part of the project, a task force was created to investigate how the New School can reexamine its curriculum with a focus on climate justice, as well as to evaluate the school’s contribution to climate justice and its role in the greater community.

Recap of Online Earth Week 2020 Events

April is normally the busiest month for the Tishman Center, as the variety of programming focused on Earth Day that we have spent several months developing comes to life on campus. This year, however, in light of COVID-19, the Tishman Center, along with the rest of the world, had to rapidly readjust and find ways to transition towards a virtual format to ensure that we keep our community safe but still get a chance to connect.

Earth Week 2020 Virtual Events

The Tishman Center has had to cancel our extensive Earth Month programming in light of the social distancing measures and our responsibility to provide spaces for our community. However, we believe it is crucial to still find creative ways of coming together and sharing perspectives around the moment in time we find ourselves in and how it relates to the underlying injustices that have threatened vulnerable communities before the pandemic and now becoming a threat multiplier.
