Symbiotic Earth Film Screening

  • The New School Univesity Center 63 5th Avenue, Room UL105 New York, NY, 10003 United States (map)

Join a panel of New School students and faculty for a screening of Symbiotic Earth: A film about Lynn Margulis, a scientific rebel and a role model of female empowerment. The film documents her persistent fight against the male establishment and how she ultimately triumphed. She was ridiculed as a young scientist in the 1960s, when she proposed an alternative theory that symbiosis was a key driver of the evolutionary processes rather than the mechanistic view that stipulated that random genetic mutation and computation were the sole drivers of evolution. Her alternative and radical theory involved a symbiotic narrative wherein bacteria joined together to create the complex cells that formed animals, plants, and all other organisms. The idea that all of life is deeply interconnected and collaborative has transformative implications for ecology, ethics, politics, and spirituality. Her ideas have radical implications for the way we understand what it means to be alive.
