Calling all New School Community members!
Please join the official New School group in this year’s NYC Pride March on Sunday, June 25.
The first NYC Pride March was held in 1970 and has since become an annual civil rights demonstration. Over the years, NYC Pride March has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost to illness, violence and neglect.
This year, a contingent of New School students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the greater university community will march behind The New School banner and join millions of participants and spectators in celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans/nonbinary, queer, intersex, asexual, and genderqueer/gender-nonconforming (LGBTQIAGNC+) identity. Our delegation will also march in support of those who choose to join the Queer Liberation March and the LGBTQIAGNC+ communities that have been silenced, marginalized, and oppressed in the U.S. and beyond.
If you are interested in joining us at Pride, please sign up by June 10 to participate in the march and to attend one of the mandatory orientation sessions, either on Wednesday, 6/21 (in-person), or Thursday, 6/22 (via Zoom).
Mark your calendar—let’s march and celebrate Pride together!

Frequently Asked Questions
History of New School at Pride
This is the second time our university will be officially marching in the NYC Pride March, offering our diverse, inclusive community a rare and exciting opportunity to come together and show our support. New School students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the greater university community will join millions of marchers and spectators in celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, asexual, and genderqueer/genderfluid/nonconforming (LGBTQIAGNC+) identities.
Where do I sign up?
Please fill out the RSVP form on this page by June 10 to let us know that you’ll participate and what you can contribute to the march.
I understand orientation is mandatory. When is orientation?
In-person orientation and sign-making will happen on Wednesday, June 21, from 3:00pm - 4:30pm at the University Center Distance Learning Room (U 304). Swag will be distributed at the orientation.
I can’t attend the in-person orientation on June 21. Can I still participate?
If you are attending the march but cannot make the in-person orientation event, you may join the virtual orientation on Thursday, June 22, 4:00 pm, via Zoom. Please RSVP in order to submit the Zoom link.
Can I bring friends?
Yes! But swag will be limited to New School community members.
What is the route?
The Pride Parade kicks off at 25th Street and 5th Avenue, then proceeds south on 5th Avenue before heading west on 8th Street. After crossing over 6th Avenue, it will continue on Christopher Street passing the Stonewall National Monument. We are waiting for more information from this year’s organizers that includes the final route and designated start location.
Is there a wait time?
Unfortunately, yes. On the day of the event we will need to assemble at the designated spot early in the morning and wait until it's time to start walking. In 2019, the wait time was 3 hours. Hopefully, 2023 will be much shorter!
What is the accessibility at the event?
This event requires a lot of walking and standing over several hours. Sitting during the wait time is on the street/sidewalk. The bathrooms are limited to private venues along the route and some porta potties.
