ONLINE| The World Is On Fire: Managing emotions in response to the climate crisis (The New School only)

Monday, September 19, 2022, 2:00PM to 3:00PM (EDT)

It is evident in these times that climate change is a serious crisis, with serious consequences. The potential mental health impacts are being seen in people of all ages, all around the world. It can be difficult to navigate these feelings and find spaces to process them. In this workshop, Marisa will identity some of the ways that bearing witness to environmental destruction may effect one’s mental health and will help attendees to feel less alone in this experience. She will also provide guidance and suggestions for managing these, at times overwhelming, emotions.

This will be part of a series of workshops for Climate Week and open only to The New School community. Sign up for the second part will open up after the first session and have limited capacity.

About the facilitator:

Marisa Mabli, LCSW, (she/her) has worked in college mental health since 2014 and specializes in body image and eating concerns, substance use, and sexuality and gender identity. She is a graduate of Simmons University School of Social Work and has a certificate in spirituality and social work from NYU. She has also completed the WTCI Post-Graduate Program in Feminist Relational Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desenitization & Reprocessing). Marisa is a member of the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America and has presented on Climate Crisis Grief for therapists and the general public. IN PERSON AND ONLINE | ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE LEADERS CRUSH CLIMATE WEEK: Climate Justice Movements Disrupt Business As Usual at COP27

Thursday, September 22, 2022 3:30PM to 5:30PM (EDT)

66 West 12th Street, New York, NY 10011

The upcoming 27th UNFCCC Conference Of the Parties (COP) in Egypt has been optimistically designed as a space for governments, policy makers, business, and civil society to confront the growing climate crisis. This year, Social Movements are being restricted from organizing on the “streets” to build power with local Egyptian communities not accredited to enter the COP official spaces - seriously limiting the input of civil society in the COP negotiations.

Representatives from frontline environmental justice communities will gather to; Reflect on the historical wins of Social Movements at the UNFCC-Conference of Parties, Share the evolution and co-mingling of national and international policy that help and hurt BIPOC frontline communities, workers, and women most impacted as a result of the negotiations and,
CrowdSource how to creatively disrupt business as usual along with three decades of global incremental climate negotiations that have seem to run their course.

The discussion will explore the unique role of frontline delegates both inside and outside strategy in the negotiations, resistance to false solutions and organizing for more inclusive, democratic and just climate solutions beyond the Conference of Parties. This session will be part panel and part PreCOP planning session. It and is open to movement partners involved in COP as well as Students, and Faculty. It is hosted by the Environmental Justice Movement Fellowship at the Tishman Environment and Design Center.

IN PERSON | Newark EJ Tour - The New School Only

Friday, September 30, 2022 to 2:00PM to 6:00PM (EDT)

EJ Tours are an important way we can gain a greater understanding of environmental justice issues in practice. By visiting with grassroots community based organizations in these two EJ communities we have a unique opportunity to get a deeper sense of EJ work in practice. The tours are a chance to physically experience and be immersed in the spaces that EJ communities call home and to enrich your appreciation for the many dimensions of what makes each community special. These tours are not meant to be voyeuristic - they are invitations to practice building community with EJ groups we will be committed to working with over the course of the semester and I will be committed to beyond this semester. This initial touch point gives you a chance to learn about EJ in an experiential way but to also reflect on your own commitments and connectedness to these places.

EJ Tours are a labor of love for EJ activists and organizers who take time to share their work and their lived experiences - being able to learn and be physically present with them is a gift - so please try your best to attend these sessions and arrive on time to respect their offerings.

*Space is very limited and this is event is only for The New School students, staff and faculty. Masks will be required while on the bus.
